Following Fast Produce, a writing and production blitz that saw the Get Fresh Crew produce 20 same-day radio ads for clients willing to pay a reasonable price, we met COJO’s Ad Copy and Design students in the classroom to deliver a creative challenge. The objective? To write, record, and produce a 30-second radio ad for a brand of their choice, in an industry of our choice.
A strong creative process and a collaborative approach are key to generating good ideas. So we kicked things off with the work behind some of our greatest audio projects, from ideation to on-air, starting with the finest storage and transfer radio campaign the world’s ever heard. We walked through the assignment, which challenged students to first build an objective, determine an audience, and identify the benefits and features of their product or service, and left them with a few tips to uncover key insights, generate ideas, and start writing.
Feedback is vital to creative work. So after three weeks of jamming in their small groups, we checked back with the students via Zoom to see where their research and writing had landed them. They walked us through their audiences and scripts, and we offered up our insights and revisions before meeting back in person. This time, in the studio.
Between writing and producing, students learned how to source sound effects and direct voiceover, collecting everything needed to lay down their final tracks. But feedback doesn’t end just because you’ve made it to the editing bay. In the studio, we leaned in and listened closely alongside each team to make adjustments and reinforce good production practices before exporting and posting their final assets for grading.
